Winter Flowers - A Small February Offering

Some say that it is the measure of a good gardener is if there is something in bloom in the garden in every season of the year.    By that token I am not a very good gardener.  Winter is my weakspot.  Except for pansies, hellebores and primroses  there is nothing to gather to bring into the house.  Hopeless.  So for what it is worth here is a meagre posy of  February flowers and foliage.  Depending on how I edit the photos and where I place them in the light the posy looks totally different each time.

When you think that just a few years ago we would take pictures, wait until we had a full reel then take them to be developed - a few days later collect them, pay a fortune and find that half of them were no good.  Now we can take dozens of pictures every day, mess about with them till they look right and put them on our blogs within minutes.  That's progress for you!

'Til the next time

  1. Lovely to see some blooms in February! Not much blooming around here ~ although it turned bright, sunny and 8C, so that might start some spring roots stirring :) Interesting how the bouquet takes on different appearances...so right about the change that has come about due to digital photography! ... and how easily we embraced it!

    1. Hopefully it will be only a few weeks now until the garden is awash with daffodils

  3. You are better off than than I am with your flowers elaine..
what a sweet little bouquet.. I like the different settings you showed them in.
How I agree.. how many photos have we all thrown away. I was only clearing my photo box the other day.. things of no consequence.. The digital camera was the greatest invention ever.
I remember the day, my eldest son introduced me to them.. and how i learnt how to put the reading card in.. i was so nervous. Now we can play away till our hearts content..
    nice post

    1. It is certainly a great improvement to be able to see your pictures straight away

  4. It may be meagre but lovely nevertheless, and so welcome at this time of year.
Like you I marvel at how photography has changed so much, in such a short time. Flighty xx

  5. Nothing beats a bouquet of fresh flowers. I've only greenery to go into vases. I've discovered a vase of ivy isn't too bad - but not as nice as your bouquet!

    1. Greenery can be just as lovely - I was struggling just to find these few flowers.

  6. It's a lovely posy!! Bringing them into the house lets us appreciate their beauty, the garden still looks so very sparse.

  7. Beautiful different photos of a lovely posy! There is nothing better then own flowers, even if it's only one. When I see your posy I have to think of Vita Sackville West, in one of her books she called a February posy which her neighbour presented her a "tuzzy muzzy". I like that pretty name.

    1. I like the name tuzzy muzzy too - I must remember that next time I blog about my posies.

  8. I think you have done quite well with your winter posy. By the "blooms year 'round" quote, I'd be a pretty dismal gardener. And that's okay. I don't think I've got enough energy to garden like that!

    1. Too true - maybe by next year I will have added one or two things for winter interest.

  9. What a beautiful posy. You say you're a bad gardener...I have to disagree, you actually have flowers, and pretty ones at that...I have zip, narda, zilch in my garden, well except for two snowdrops. I hoping the daffs open soon....

Digital cameras are wonderful, funny enough I was chatting to hubs about this last night. It was so expensive taking pics in the past and waiting for them to be developed.I love progress!xxxxx

  10. Your WInter bouquet is delightful. I had one little bunch of snowdrops - that is all - and now they are being covered in snow!

    1. Oh dear - they will be ok after all they are 'snow' drops.

  11. I love your high definition photo. Worthy of a glossy magazine. So pretty next to the stones to set them off.
I have nothing to show for at this time of the year. Ah well...

  12. What a beautiful bouquet Elaine. I am not a winter gardener either exception being a few hellebore's. Great shots. I think digital cameras are the best invention yet. LOL!

  13. I like the high def photo too.
I can well remember those days of film cameras. Unfortunately, I'm still in the habit of taking just one photo of something, instead of taking dozens, saving the best and deleting the rest. I'm slowly starting to take more than one photo these days. Although, strangely enough, the first photo is usually the best one.

    1. Unfortunately I am a bit trigger happy when it comes to taking photos I have hundreds stored. I really must have a good clear out one day.

  14. Well, on that basis I fear I'm not a good gardener at all! Your posy is hardly meagre, Elaine. Very pretty. D

  15. We have nothing in bloom here. I don't grow heliebores. I don't even know if they can be grown here. Your flower bouquet is really pretty and your photo editing has added nice effects. You are right, today's photography is so much fun. I always wanted to have dark room, but never had the opportunity. Now I don't one. I just need to master the Photoshop Elements II that I just bought. What do you use to edit your photos?

    1. Nothing fancy Ann just Picasa where my photos are stored. I must admit I do like to have a little play to see how different the photos look.

  16. I echo the comments of the others Elaine, can't see why you think being able to pick such a lovely bouquet from your garden in the middle of February makes you a poor gardener - glad I don't hold myself to your standards! Though I did find some daffs open in the middle of a fuchsia today, which was a lovely surprise...

    1. A few daffs would have been a lovely addition - mine are nowhere near ready yet.

  17. That's a beautiful posy - I'm not very good at picking flowers for inside, I have good intentions but somehow never manage it!

    1. The only reason I went out looking for flowers was so that I had something to blog about - inspiration is hard to come by in these winter months.

  18. You should be very proud of that posy, its a lovely collection of flowers especially considering the cold weather we have had which is holding everything back a bit.

  19. There is just snow in my garden, so you are doing well. I remember the days of cameras with film all to well. Digital cameras are so much more liberating. You can shoot away without worrying about the expense of the film and the cost of development. Modern cameras are a god send if you ask me. Happy Valentines's Day Elaine!

  20. What a lovely winter posy to grace any windowsill Elaine. Is that viburnum as well in the vase?
