It's Just Not The Right Sort of Blog

I have been lacking inspiration to write about gardening over the last couple of weeks as nothing much is happening in the garden - it is a dead zone at the moment - the bulbs are still only a couple of inches tall and no matter how hard I look everything seems frozen in time.

Now if this was a crafting blog I could tell you about the tapestry that I have been sewing since Christmas
But it's not the right sort of blog - or may be I could tell you about the blanket squares I have been knitting

But it's not the right sort of blog - now if it was a blog about de-cluttering your life - I could tell you that I have been clearing out my wardrobe

But it's not the right sort of blog - or maybe that I have been sorting out my bookshelves and getting rid of books that I no longer want

But it's not the right sort of blog -  I could  perhaps tell you how much I enjoy doing crosswords

but you wouldn't be interested - neither would you be interested in me telling you which books I am reading at the moment

because it's not a blog about books - it is a blog about bloomin' gardening - and there's very little of that going on - if only it was the right sort of blog I would have plenty to say.
Maybe next time!

  1. I agree that this time of year can be so frustrating for gardeners (but not craft bloggers!) For gardeners, its all about "what I'm going to do" in the garden this year rather than what I can get out and do right now. If only it would warm up a bit.

    1. I felt like a different person last weekend when we had some lovely sunshine and I was able to get out and do a bit - but at the moment it is just too darn cold.

  2. I have some Kate Morton novels too but I tend to wait for paperbacks. The last one I read was Distant Hours.

    1. I prefer paperbacks myself - hardcovers are much too heavy to read in the bath - this particular book I bought for a friend for Christmas and I have borrowed it back - I have read all Kate Mortons so far and am really enjoying this one.

  3. Hello elaine,
you have so many nice things to blog about.. maybe just add them to your profile. Your tapestry looks lovely.
I came home from England and the weather is awful. Heavy rain and low grey skies.. I was wanting to garden this weekend. Seems we will have this for another 3 or 4 days.
wishing you a happy weekend.. and hope you will be able to garden soon and show some of your lovely plants.

    1. Hi Val - I have decided to expand my repertoire of the things I can blog about as there are so many months of the gardening year where nothing much happens - hope you enjoyed your holiday - I look forward to reading all about it on your blog.

  4. Multi-purpose blogs are OK by me! Interesting people are interested in lots of things, I find.

    1. I must admit, unlike you, I do find it a struggle to keep up the gardening flow during winter - so will probably introduce more topics gradually.

  5. Just like the plants, we regain strength and purpose by this dormant time. I know that my memories and anticipation of the coming season revitalizes me - and if a closet or two get cleaned.... all the better. Have a great day.

    1. Thanks for commenting Claudia - I do find this time of year very frustrating - patience isn't one of my virtues.

  6. Well all I can say is that it's your blog and you can blog about anything and everything you feel like!!!!
Personally, I have enjoyed finding out a little more about you, your likes, hobbies and what you do and read.....and would LOVE to find out more!!!xxxxx

    1. Well it is supposed to be a gardening blog - but especially in winter I think I will have to branch out as gardening topics are thin on the ground.

  7. Brilliant I love it Elaine although surely you should write about what ever you want to write about, shouldn't you? Sure enough wait til you see when there's plenty going on in the garden there won't be enough time to write about it.

    1. I know I should be able to blog about anything but it seems I am rather shy of letting go of my inhibitions and feel safer when I just stick to gardening.

  8. It's just the right sort of post though, as it's one that I really enjoyed reading and made me smile. What more could I ask of a lovely blog like this. Flighty xx

  10. An interesting post even without the gardening. Here in the north of New Zealand we don't have a down time as there is something to do in the garden all year. Right now we could do with some rain but I gather there is none of significance on the horizon for over a month and we have had nothing but the odd drizzle all year.

    1. We had a couple of years where we had dry winters - this year has certainly made up for it.

  11. I really like this post. :o) My garden is as boring as dust right now so it's a challenge to find stuff to blog about. I also like it when you get to know a bit more about the blogger than just their garden.

    1. Because there is so little going on everyone seems to be writing about the same plants - trying to find a new angle to blog about is certainly a challenge.

  12. The long winter is indeed very frustrating for garden bloggers as we are, the soil is still frozen so we cannot do anything in the garden. I think you made a lovely creative post about all the things you do and could write about, but don't want to because it is your gardening blog. I understand for I have about the same. There are many things I could write about but it has nothing to do with gardening. Well spring will arrive soon!

    1. You are absolutely right Janneke but maybe we could veer away from gardening during the winter months then it wouldn't be such a struggle to find things to write about.

  13. I think you should make your blog the right kind of blog, i.e. about anything you fancy writing about at the time, then we could learn about your tapestry, or what the knitted squares are for.

    1. It will seem strange writing about something other than gardening - I'll just have to see how it goes.

  14. Mine is a very eclectic blog, gardening is one of many things I write about. I would enjoy reading about other things in your blog too, dont let it put you off!!

  15. The weather does seem to be against us. All winter it's been so mild down here, but also so very wet. Stand on soil and sink. And now it's dry enough for the first time, it all freezes up!

Your writing is always interesting, on any topic. Send out new shoots!

    1. It's the same here - soil frozen solid and the weather so uninviting - so frustrrating.

  16. I don't think you'll have much too long to wait as we're heading into our last week of winter at last :) I wouldn't mind reading The Curious Gardener too.

    1. Thank goodness - this winter has seemed interminable. I could pass on The Curious Gardener on to you when I have finished reading it if you email me your address.

  17. Well, I certainly enjoyed learning about all the things you're doing while you're not gardening! Since you've finished your de-cluttering, would you like a little visit to California to do my closets??

  18. I love this post Elaine! I can't tell you how many times I have felt trapped in my "gardening" blog. There is more to me than gardening and flowers! My anguish is self-inflicted of course. No one made me do a gardening blog. In this post you have so cleverly manage to step out of your usual focus.
You are certainly keeping busy this winter. I am currently working on a needlepoint Ehrman cat pillow. I figure I ought to have at least one cat in this house of dogs.
The two books look interesting. You should do a book review of one of them for Holley Garden's monthly review club. (I think the books need to have a gardening theme, but don't need to be how-to books?)

    1. Thanks Jennifer - we seem to have made a rod for our own backs. My tapestry is an Ehrman too I am realy enjoying it - I think I will put one on my Christmas list every year. I will check out Holley Gardens review club as I do seem to read an awful lot of gardening books.

  19. Lovely to have a little expanded view of what's keeping you busy Elaine. Hope you're enjoying The Curious Gardener, it's one I'm also reading at the moment. I think you're very clever to be able to do tapestry and would love to see more of this work as it progresses!

    1. Yes I am enjoying The Curious Gardener I have several of Anna Pavord's books - she gives a slightly different perspective to gardening. The tapestry is slow going and I think it will take me to next Christmas to complete but I like to be doing something with my hands in my spare moments.

  20. Lovely to see some of your other interests and talents :) If we just focussed on gardening, we'd waste a lot of unused opportunity ~ so it's always good to have many options :) Your tapestry is beautiful, btw!

  21. Well, for not having much to blog about, you certainly have had a bit of a response! Yes it is a dull time of year. I still enjoyed seeing how you pass your time--actually doing important things. Then you will be quite ready to garden in the spring, which is only weeks away, now.

  22. I had people over for dinner and ventured out in the garden to find something blooming for the table. I managed to eke out three miniature daffodils with only minor slug damage, frothed them up with some kind of carroty foliage, and put it in the bathroom where the scale was better.

    1. You did better than I could - not a sign of daffodils yet - hope they haven't given up the ghost.
