Disaster Update ...

We have been staying in a hotel for the past ten days; travelling backwards and forwards every day to try and get some semblance of order in our home.  The insurance assessors have been; the soaking carpets have been removed and the rooms are slowly drying out.  An electrician has been and tested everything for safety; a plumber has been and replaced the burst radiator which caused all the damage.  It is a slow, step by step process, which cannot be hurried.  Everything is in total chaos but we are moving back in on Saturday and will try to live as normally as we can in just the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom.  The living room furniture is salvageable but the bedroom furniture has suffered the most damage and will all be thrown out.  Once the drying process is complete, the decorators will come in.  We think that it will be about a month or so before life gets back to normal and we will just have to put up with it all till then.  Blogging will be put on the back burner for a while but I want to thank you for all your thoughts and good wishes and hope to get back into the swing of things in the not too distant future.

  1. Dear Elaine - I am so sad for you and your husband to read this - I was unaware of what had happened, but have now gone back and looked at your previous post.
Is it 'sod's law' the way fate hands us a backhand and why could this not have happened when you were still at home and caught it in time? I am sure that you must have asked the same question yourselves.
You are obviously in control of the situation now, and I wish you both well and that everything is back to normal for you as quickly as possible.

  2. Elaine, the ruin is so heart breaking, but at least all salvageable . Soon it will be all new again. I hope that you haven't lost any treasures that are irreplaceable. I'll be thinking of you.

  6. Reminds me of when we were having major extension work although at least we didn't lose furniture. Were your clothes OK? Hope things progress well for you.

  7. Thinking of you Elaine. Not much worse than that, but from what you say, that seems a quick turn around time. Stay strong.

  8. How utterly, awfully awful. Can't think of how terribly disturbing this must be. Hopefully things will eventually go back to even better than normal but it sounds like a hard time in the medium term.
On a flippant note - I thought it would be fun to have a 'testimonials' page on my blog (http://tinyurl.com/zhlzlsz) and have included a quote from you and a link to your blog. I hope this pleases you but if not - I'll easily remove it. Best wishes. Esther Montgomery

  10. Oh my god! What destruction, water is the worst by far!!! Sorry you're having to deal with all this....hopefully it will all get done, and sooner rather than later. I'm SO glad you're home now though, at least you can supervise proceedings, cook, garden and take long walks to get away from it all, and hopefully the sun will shine on you.xxx

  12. Oh Elaine, it was dreadful, and an unwelcome speed bump in your otherwise peaceful and enviable existence there in your part of the world. I am so glad that you see some light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe there will even be a silver lining in this damnable cloud....I do hope so.

  15. So sorry to hear what happened. It is good that you are now able to move back home even though it will be hard.

Of course, it would have to happen after all your decorating.

Best wishes and hugs from New Zealand.

  16. What a mess!!! You seem to be working through the recovery process in a systematic manner and a least with summer on its way the days should be brighter and warmer.

  18. It is always hard to imagine the scale of these things. It's small steps at the moment, I guess. How awful tho', thinking of you.

  20. Oh, I am so sorry Elaine, to see this - awful to mend all the damage, and awful to need so much patience! I wish you stamina, and that everything will become as beautiful as before.

  21. Oh crikey Elaine, what a mess .... it must break your heart everytime you look at it. All I can say is just think how beautiful it will all be in a few weeks time. Onwards and upwards and a positive mental attitude. Lots of love. XXXX

  25. Hi Elaine - I know just how you feel we had a major flood through our cottage in August 2014 after storm Bertha and we are still not back in yet - our saving grace is that it was the place we had bought to retire to so not our main home at that point and our contents were minimal although everything had to be skipped and ten years renovation work down the drain. I am sure you will be home soon - but a word of advice keep a note of all communications with the insurers and keep hassling them to get the work done quickly. keep us posted Thinking of you Viv

  27. Not a regular follower of your blog, hence this very late comment, but I just wanted to say how very sorry I am to read that you've had such a disaster - water makes such a mess everywhere.
I do hope that all will very soon be restored, and you can once again relax and enjoy life.
