When Dreams Turn Into Nightmares

A short post to say that my 'short' blog break will be turning into a rather longer one than anticipated. We went away for a break and within 24 hours the nightmare began.  Our home flooded when a radiator burst.  Our neighbour noticed water seeping through into her home.  Luckily I had left a key with a friend and she was able to get in and turn the water off.  Unfortunately, the damage had already been done.  The leak was upstairs, the water soaked the bedroom, and the living room below.  Do you remember a couple of months ago we finished decorating and re-furnishing all our furniture - well all that work is now ruined.

So we are effectively homeless.  As from Friday we are booked into a hotel but after Sunday we are not sure where we will be living.  The insurance company have been informed and are taking the situation in hand.  Everything is in a devasting mess, it is heartbreaking to see.

So you can understand my dilemma, blogging is the last thing on my mind.  Our friends and neighbours have been wonderful, we couldn't have managed without them.  I will try to give you the odd update when I can.  We feel like a pair of homeless refugees, living out of a suitcase, lots of tears and no sleep - the worry of it all.  Our world turned upside down in a matter of hours.  You sometimes wonder how you can carry on.

  1. Oh Elaine, that is dreadful news. Heartbreaking to see your lovely home in such a mess; I'm sure you are in shock still after discovering it.
I hope that your insurers move fast to deal with the damage and restore your home and belongings. In the meantime, I wish you well in finding somewhere warm and comfortable to live while you gather your wits again and recover from the initial shock. (((((Elaine))))) xx

  8. Oh Elaine, I am so sorry. Water is so unforgiving, often leaving little to be salvaged or reclaimed. Hopefully some of the damage can be dried out and other replaced fresh and new. In the meantime, it is no fun being homeless and suffering the expense and stress of figuring things out. I do like what Rusty Duck writes, a glimmer of hope and encouragement. I'll be thinking of you.

  12. Oh my goodness Elaine .... how awful. What a terrible thing to have happened..... these things are sent to try us and I cannot imagine how you're feeling.... I can't believe that all of your decorating is ruined. I suppose all that I can say on a tiny positive note is that nobody died but that doesn't really help much.
Hope that you can sort everything as quickly as possible and that the process won't be too traumatic. Sending much love to you both and am thinking of you. XXXX

  13. Oh NO! What a dreadful thing to happen, I can imagine how traumatic it all is, especially not knowing where you will be staying, on that note, there is a spare bedroom and a lounge here and you are MOST welcome to stay if accommodation is an issue.Oh, what an awful shame about all that decorating being spoilt, I have my fingers crossed that the damage is limited and can be sorted out quickly and efficiently by the insurance company.
I do feel for you both, what a horrible situation, keep in touch and let us know how things are going. I shall be thinking of you, my friend.xxxxxxx

  26. That is the most awful thing to have happened. I do feel for you. To have your home ruined and such uncertainty about when you will be back there. Take care of yourself and be strong.

  27. Poor you, that is awful. Some friends of ours had just installed a very expensive central heating system when they went away for two days. For some reason they turned the heating off, and a sharp frost burst most of the pipes and the lovely cast iron radiators. The insurance people refused to pay-up, and they had no more money to replace it. I feel for you.

  28. My thoughts and sympathy are with you, not an enviable situation at all. (understatement of the year!)

But you must think positive (yes, easier said than done!) sending good and positive thoughts your way.

It WILL be sorted and life will return to normal.

    Take Care - God Bless

    All the best Jan

  29. Oh, Elaine - what misfortune! I feel so sorry for you - the horror of having a home flooded, and then, added, to think that you just had decorated it before! I hope that the insurance company and the craftsmen will work well and soon help you to clear the outer turmoil - the inner disturbances of peace will need more time to heal! Keep san.
