Autumn Sowings

I love cutting Sunflowers for my kitchen windowsill it cheers the room up no end

Had another good afternoon in the garden yesterday and sowed some mixed wildflower seed in one border, I bought the seed at 75% off the normal price  when the shop was getting rid of all end of season seed packets.  I buy a lot of my seed like this as it saves a lot of money.  I'm not sure what will come up though, the picture on the packet shows lots of varieties, but I expect one flower will dominate, one that I probably don't want, but it will be interesting to see what happens.  I also sowed Cornflowers outside, so if it works it will hopefully give a nice natural display.  I don't usually do this because of the cat problem we have, but you never know, it might work.
These are the four Hebe plants that I bought as replacements for the ones lost overwinter.  I have potted them up into bigger plant pots and will be keeping them in the greenhouse before planting out next spring.  They were only £2.99 each, good value I reckon.  I have a real soft spot for Hebes, they flower for a long time and I love the glossy foliage and they come in all shapes and sizes.  I just hope I can hang on to these four - I will try and find reasonably sheltered spots for them once I do plant them out.

I have begun dismantling all my summer containers, a job I hate doing when the flowers, like the Pelargoniums above, are still going strong, but I need to get the Daffodils in soon - I have taken cuttings but they don't do very well overwinter in my unheated greenhouse, I always try - you never know, one day I may succeed.

  1. Do you just scatter the wildflower seeds? How do you know which are flowers and which are weeds when they start to come up?

  2. I also dread emptying the containers...doesn't seem as fun as filling them. I really like your sunflowers...beautiful!

  3. meand2veg - yes I did just scatter the seed - I figured that's how it would happen in nature, I guess you just wait and see what emerges.

Sage Butterfly - it has started raining here now so perhaps I can put the job off for a little longer. Yes, the sunflowers are beautiful aren't they.

  5. I like the sunflowers! I scatter some wildflower seed on my wildlife areas every year, it's always interesting to see what germainates and grows. Flighty xx

  6. I am a recovering Hebe addict, though I suspect that if my next garden has the space and climate for them, I will be back to my old tricks...

  7. I love the sunflowers are they a pollen free variety? I grew some this year but they shed an awful lot of pollen.
