It Never Rains But It Pours!

This Polemonium is the latest addition to my garden.  It is a short-lived perennial with cup shaped lilac flowers with yellow stamens.  It prefers a sunny site with well-drained soil and is fully hardy.

This photo was taken on the 22nd April which was the last time we saw a little sun.  Since then it has rained solidly every day non-stop.

I went to check up on my sheep this morning, the rain still lashing down - the field is a complete swamp, the sheeps' feet sinking inches down into the mud.  They have sheds in which to shelter - when they heard me coming in through the gate -they dashed out from their sheds, ate the food I put down for them - and dashed back in.

I feel sorry for all those little lambs out in the fields, snuggling up to their mothers - soaked to the skin.  The horses are all trying to shelter in the hedgerows, backs to the rain - looking miserable.

Not the best April we have ever had!

  1. Hi Elaine, yes I feel really sorry too for all the little lambs in the fields and any other animals too come to think of it.I cant believe how appalling the weather is, I know we need some rain but surely its got to stop some time soon!
Love Jacobs ladder flowers, I had some at our old garden and they do self seed but dont become a nuisance.

  3. I grew a polemonium a few years ago, but mine was very, very short lived. Sorry to hear about the animals, but hopefully they'll get a drier day tomorrow.

  4. Didn't realise you had sheep? They must be rightly annoyed as are you by the sounds of it. Isn't April a funny month for weather? Don't worry as May is almost here and sure who knows we may have blue skys and sunshine til September (live in hope!!)

  5. I think that it could turn out to be one of the wettest and sunless Aprils that we have had for years Elaine. Atrocious here again today. My polemoniums must have not read the books, as they have been going for several years. I grow them in a north facing border where they are in dappled shade rather than full sun. The first flowers opened yesterday.

  6. Yes, it's definitely been a wet one! Like Anna, my polemoniums didn;t read the books and have been going for years! I even inherited some which had survived 4 years of total neglect so are now at last 8 years old and came into flower last week. I hope yours continue for many years too as they are so delightful!

  7. Did I know that you had sheep? My husband wants sheep. Hens and a horse are enough. We could use some of your rain if you have had enough. Been chilly, sunny, and dry.

  9. Oh would I love to have sheep, but even more would love to have a goat! But it would never work as I am such a softy - I'd be bringing them all in the garage or the house in the rain! Or making rubber boots for all - oh but a goat might eat them. Sorry about all your rain, but it will be such a good thing when it ends and you did need it so!

  10. I didn't know you had sheep either! Would love to see photos of the cute little lambs. Rain is great, but not for a week straight! Hope you see some sunshine soon.

  11. It has been unremitting hasn't it? I look at photos from this time last year and can't help feel hard done by. I suppose it will all catch up but it does seem we're on hold.

  12. It's sure been a rather miserable month so let's hope that May is brighter, drier and warmer! Flighty xx
